GSC policy on the use and development of CV's and Ontologies
The GSC is not going to build one single CV or ontology for use in completing MIGS/MIMS compliant reports. Instead, it is necessary to use several from the start and this is facilited by the recent growth in the number of ongoing ontology projects (OBO Foundry). The GSC has therefore adopted the following policy:
- As of MIGS version 1.1 the types of input for all fields is specified as far as possible as a "CV" (when no ontology exists or the list of terms is implementation specific) or "Ontology" or "Type" - like integer etc when simply a restriction of the input type). See the MIGS checklist for a list of fields to be described by CVs and Ontologies and the page CVs and Ontology used in MIGS for more detailed information.
- All terms used to complete MIGS genome reports in the Genome Catalogue will be submitted to the Ontology for Biomedical Investigations unless a more relevant OBO Ontology exists. The terms for 'habitat' will be submitted to the Env Ontology (see below).
- The GSC, as part of the wider remit beyond the development and implementation of MIGS/MIMS, is keen to support the development of CV's and Ontologies relevant to the description of complete genome sequences and metagenomes.
