GSC and the INSDC
From Genomic Standards Consortium
What is the INSDC
A full description of the INSDC is given on its homepage: http://www.insdc.org/page.php?page=home
The GSC looks to the INSDC as the authority in the long-term stewarship of genomic data (See [GSC Publications] - Morrison et al, 2006 and workshop reports)
As an action of 3rd GSC workshop, Guy Cochrane from EMBL put forward the activities of the GSC as an agenda item for the INSDC Collaborators meeting in May 2007. At the 4th GSC workshop he presented an update on GSC activities and sought discussion about the longer-term relationship between the INSDC and the GSC.
The response (guidance) of the INSDC was summarized in five points which Guy presented at the 4th GSC workshop.
Many thanks to Guy for taking this forward. He has agreed to do so again at the next collaborators meeting in May 2008.
The INSDC point and the GSC responses are given below.
Five points from INSDC meeting
[edit] ==================
1. INSDC takes a passive interest in the MIGS standard – its development and take-up by the community
2. INSDC encourages curated content at GCat as a means for GSC to further community acceptance
3. INSDC recommends that fields common to both INSDC and GCat records be made read only in GCat, such that INSDC remains the authoritative source
4. INSDC will not direct its submitters routinely towards GCat, but will provide access to dumps of read only information for upload
5. INSDC considers that gene nomenclatures should not be covered by GSC activities
