Discussion about the Genomics Rosetta Stone session at the 4th GSC workshop
Peter, Rod, Dawn, Tanya
Apologies: Nikos, Dinos
Peter did an introduction to the GoToMeeting - worked well - shared the wiki page as DF edited, but could be used to share anything in principle.
Peter suggested that we could consider this workshop: http://www.bioscope-it.be/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=72&Itemid=45
Reviewed the Genomic Rosetta Stone wiki page and the background to the project.
updating the information from the straininfo.net
P: do you still want a mapping to PID?
DF: GOLD has a larger list of identifiers and so for now we can map to GOLD or PID, they are synonymous for now in this project
P: Are there are still GOLD entries that are not yet mapped to PID?
TG: Yes
TG: looking at your new pages, what we need is a webservice to retrieve information by PID or GOLD
P: we have a long roadmap ahead, we thing can be prioritized
DF: the Genome Catalogue has two ways to 'consume' this type of information - to 'decorate' genome reports as people browse or better, file in MIGS/MIMS reports, or to hyperlink strain, for example, and allow people to link out to your site to browse it
P: We could work on this over the coming weeks
DF: Ideal, would be the simplest case where we can link out to your site and view the page like you present it for the strains with complete genomes
Defining webservices
We should talk at the meeting on overall requirements for future webservices - how we implement the mapping.
Federated group of webservices is what we want - an easy to use central registry required
As models, mentioned looking towards BioMoby, MyGRID, GBIF etc
R: We should no over-engineer any solutions, group agreed.
P: Paul is happy to have Peter talk for straininfo.net in 1 talk
DF: great this frees up more time for discussion
R & P: further discussed the power of mashups, led to discussion of LSIDs
R: in favor of URIs (LSIDs not yet robust enough), this is the way into the semantic web, and further discusion
R: DOI's and handles are the only really used identifiers, issue of scale, DOI's 'cheap' for small numbers of items, not feasible for huge efforts like GBIF, URI's are the way forward, DOI's also break
Actions:
DF: Set another telecon for people in this session
DF: Look into meeting software
P: set up prototype webservice

GBIF data portal deployment model - (tgra - I understand from the page description that this is a proposal for future implementation)
UDDI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UDDI) is included as the web service registry
